The Dorcas Society was started in the Spring of 1993 by six Lihue Lutheran women. Our focus was and still is to give to those in need because Kauai and our church were the recipients of many blessings after the disastrous hurricane Iniki on September 11, 1992. As a result of the disaster, Kauai received an outpouring of help in numerous ways.
Dorcas has sent over 500 quilts around the world, many lap throws for shut ins and to long term care facilities here on Kauai. Last year Dorcas sent quilts to flood victims along the Red River in northern Minnesota and North Dakota. To date this year, we’ve sent almost 90 including 5 each month to a children’s home in Kansas City and several boxfuls to a Mexican orphanage.
With our quilts we include this message: In the Hawaiian language, Aloha means Love. May you feel the love from our hearts in the warmth of our blankets. It is signed the Dorcas Society of Lihue Lutheran Church, Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii.
The Dorcas Society meets every Wednesday, 9-11, and allows an opportunity to express unknown talents, along with fellowship, Bible Study, and prayers and strength when needed for each other. We welcome new members and your fabric donations help our Society to continue our outreach.
